Mashup?- a?web page?or application that uses and combines data, presentation or functionality from two or more sources to create new services. The term implies easy, fast integration, frequently using?open APIs?and data sources to produce enriched results that were not necessarily the original reason for producing the raw source data.
Meme ? A meme on the internet is used to describe a thought, idea, joke, or concept to be shared online. It is typically an image with text above and below it, but can also come in video and link form. A popular example is the ?I Can Has Cheezburger?? cat meme that turned into an entire site of memes.
Message?- content (invariably text based) added by a user in an Internet discussion space. Also known as a ?post?.
Myspace?- a social networking website owned by?News Corporation, stylized My_____ and previously MySpace, it became the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006 and was overtaken internationally by its main competitor,?Facebook, in April 2008. Since 2008, Myspace has been in in a continuing loss of membership, and there are several suggestions for its decline. Some said that Myspace failed to innovate and stuck to a ?portal strategy? of building an audience around entertainment and music.

Naming Convention ? a convention for naming things. In social channels this is often a commonality between the user-name or title of a users presence in channels. It is considered an important marketing component to insure branding and customer familiarity.
Networking?- Networks are structures defined by nodes and the connections between them. In social networks the nodes are people, and the connections are the relationships that they have. Networking is the process by which people develop and strengthen those relationships.
News Feed ? A news feed is literally a feed full of news. On Facebook, the News Feed is the homepage of users? accounts where they can see all the latest updates from their friends. The news feed on Twitter is called Timeline (not to get confused with Facebook?s new look, also called Timeline).
News Reader?- A news reader allows users to aggregate articles from multiple websites into one place using RSS feeds. The purpose of these aggregators is to allow for a faster and more efficient consumption of information. A?news aggregation website?is one where headlines are collected, usually manually, by the website owner.
Newsvine?- a social news site with similar functionality to Digg, in which users submit and vote for stories to be shared and read by other members of the community.
O
Objectives - a?goal?or?desired result a?person?or a?system?envisions, plans and commits to achieve. This is the basis for any social media campaign and Social Media Marketing Plan document.
Open API - a word used to describe sets of technologies that enable websites to interact with each other.
Open Graph ? a platform that allows sites and apps to share information about users in order to tailor offers, features and services to each one?s interests and tastes ? even if that individual has never visited the site before.
Open-source - practices in production and development that promote access to the end product?s source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. A main principle and practice of open source software development is?peer production by bartering and collaboration, with the end-product, source-material, ?blueprints,? and documentation available at no cost to the public.
Opera?- an open-source web browser. While not as popular as Firefox, Opera is used as the default browser on some gaming systems and mobile devices.
Orkut?- a social networking website that is owned and operated by Google. The service is designed to help users meet new friends and maintain existing relationships. Although Orkut is less popular in the United States and United Kingdom than competitors Facebook and MySpace, it is one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil.

Pandora ? a US only social online radio station a USA only, offering automated?music recommendation.? Users enter a song or artist that they enjoy, and the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar. Users provide feedback on approval or disapproval of individual songs, which Pandora takes into account for future selections.
Permalink?- A permalink is an address or URL of an individual post within a blog or website.
Pin- A pin is an image added to Pinterest. A pin can be added from a website using the Pin It button, or you can upload images from your computer. Each pin added using the Pin It button links back to the site it came from.
Ping ? in social media and communication terms, the act of sending a short message to get another users attention.
Pinterest ? Pinterest lets you organise and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favourite recipes.
Platform ? a framework (or system) in which tools work. A platform might range from mobile telephony to a piece of modular software that has blogs, forums, and wikis etc. in a suite of tools.
Podcast?- this is a non-streamed webcast. A series of digital media files, either audio or video, that are released episodically and often downloaded through an RSS feed and/or iTunes functionality.
Post - an item of content on a blog or forum.
PostRank ? PostRank monitors and collects social engagement related to content around the web. Essentially it helps publishers understand which type of content promotes sharing on the social web.
Posterous?- a blogging and content syndication platform that lets users post content by sending an e-mail.
Profiles?- are the information that you provide about yourself when signing up for a social networking site. As well as a picture and basic information, this may include personal and business interests, a ?blurb? about yourself, and tags to help you be found by other like-minded people.
Proprietary - unlike Open-source software this is owned by someone, whether a large firm or a an individual developer. Some proprietary software is free, and some open-source software may be sold, this is dependent on the terms under which the underlying code is available.?

Qik?- an online video streaming service that allows users to stream video (live) from their mobile phone to the web.
Quantcast ? Quantcast provides website traffic and demographics for websites. The tool is primarily used by online advertisers looking to target specific demographics.
R
Real-Time Search ? Real-time search is the method of indexing content being published online into search engine results with virtually no delay.
Reddit?- similar to Digg, this is a social news site that is built upon sharing and commentary on stories by a community of users.
Re-tweet ? A re-tweet is when someone on Twitter sees your message and decides to re-share it with his/her followers. A ret-tweet button allows them to quickly resend the message with attribution to the original sharer?s name.
RSS - short for Really Simple Syndication. This allows followers to subscribe to content on blogs and other social media and have it delivered to you through a feed, and for feed owners to distribute content.
RSS Reader ? An RSS reader allows users to aggregate articles from multiple websites into one place using RSS feeds. The purpose of these aggregators is to allow for a faster and more efficient consumption of information. An example of an RSS Reader is Google Reader.

Scribd - Scribd turns document formats such as PDF, Word, and PowerPoint into a web document for viewing and sharing online.
Search Engine Optimization?- SEO is the process of increasing the volume (or quality) of traffic to a website from search engines via unpaid or organic search traffic. This is done through code and keyword optimization and the generation of inbound links from quality sites.
Second Life?- Second Life is an online virtual world. Users are called ?residents? and they interact with each other through avatars. Residents can explore, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade virtual property and services with one another, and travel throughout the world. Second Life has an internal economy and internal currency, the?Linden dollar?(L$). L$ can be used to buy, sell, rent or trade land or goods and services with other users.
Seesmic?- popular desktop and mobile social application. Using APIs, Seesmic allows users to share and watch content on social networks such as Twitter and Google Buzz from the same application.
Sentiment?- the attitude of user comments related to a brand online. It is essential to measure, record, and react to sentiment as part of social media engagement.
Share - Share button to encourage visitors to share your content with their friends.
SixDegrees ? a web site that builds on the popularity of the ?small world phenomenon? to create a charitable social network and inspire giving to charities online.
SlideShare ? is an online social network for sharing presentations and documents. Users can favorite and embed presentations as well as share them on other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
Skype ? a free program that allows for text, audio, video chat, gaming, and screen sharing between users. Users can also purchase plans to receive phone calls through their Skype account.
SMMP (Social Media Marketing Plan) ? A document detailing a description of the clients? goals and objectives, target audience and an implementation plan that includes specific goals, strategies, tactics, key performance indicators to measure success and an ongoing media campaign management and support plan. The Social Media Marketing Plan is designed for businesses and organizations that want to use social media marketing to build brand-awareness, influence the acceptance and promotion of products and services, generate web site traffic, viral buzz and incoming links to their web sites for search engine optimization purposes.
Social Media?- is media?for?social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. One of the key components in successful social media marketing implementation is building ?social authority?. Social authority is developed when an individual or organization establishes themselves as an ?expert? in their given field or area, thereby becoming an influencer in that field or area.
Social Media Calendar - a document that is constantly modified and enhanced on an ongoing basis to better manage proposed messaging and content on blogs, micro-blogs and social networks. This incorporates umbrella and date-specific events that can be used to anchor a brands in-theme messaging.
Social Media Monitoring?- a process of monitoring and responding to mentions related to a business that occur in social media. This also covers the use of software and observation to record and collate visitor metrics.
Status Update ? a short, text-based entry telling your social media followers something the user deems worthwhile. Some people use it to share inspirational quotes, some use it to describe their daily actions, and some use it to share links and pictures.
StumbleUpon?- a tree web-browser extension that acts as an intelligent browsing tool for discovering and sharing web sites.
