booju_newju: FDF- Rehoming Pets

It has been almost universally accepted (at least in LJ-land) that rehoming a pet is one of the most horrible things a human being can ever do. So I come to you, Booj, with the Great Question.

When, if ever, is it acceptable to rehome a pet? When, if ever, is it acceptable to surrender a pet to a no-kill shelter? A kill shelter?
