Will you want the new BlackBerry?

We've referred to BlackBerry 10, the latest operating system released by Research in Motion (now known as BlackBerry), as the company's last hope. It's do or die, make or break, claim a hefty serving of the smartphone market or settle for a few crumbs. But setting aside all that pressure and drama, let's focus on what's important now: Will you actually want to buy a smartphone running BlackBerry 10?

Yes, no ? and maybe so.

The first device to run BlackBerry 10 is the Z10, an all-touch smartphone. Yes, you did read that right: The physical keyboard, a defining BlackBerry feature, is gone. Sure, it'll reappear with the Q10 ? the more traditional-looking of the first two BlackBerry 10 devices ? but that isn't expected to be available until April or so. For now, we can merely judge BlackBerry based on one device ... one that's a dramatic departure from the company's modus operandi.

Physically speaking, the Z10 is a beautiful device. It doesn't have some sort of flashy or daring design. Instead it's simple and unadorned, like a classy little black dress that'll seldom look out of place or out of style. Whenever I'd hand the Z10 to someone for the first time, he or she would remark that it feels a great deal like an iPhone. Take that however you will, but I see it as a good thing.

As far as the device's guts go, there's nothing that'll grab your attention too much. It has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or memory (expandable up to 64GB, thanks to a microSD slot), an 8MP camera on the back, and a 2MP camera in the front. Oh, and there's a removable battery. (As someone who has gone a long time without having to deal with annoying BlackBerry freeze-ups, I'd forgotten how important it is to have a battery that can be yanked out, if only to force a restart. And yes, the Z10 has frozen up a couple of times during my review period.)

Touchy
It's not the hardware that's the main attraction when it comes to the Z10 though. As I've said, this is the first BlackBerry 10 device. And the operating system is the deal-maker ? or deal-breaker.

Since the physical keyboard is absent, I found myself quite focused on its touch-screen replacement. It left me impressed. It definitely takes some adjustment to start using the keyboard's suggestions ? every tap brings up hovering words, and you flick a word up to select it ? yet it's amazingly easy to write entire sentences without ever actually tapping out a single full word.

Not every touch interface was as pleasant as the keyboard. The navigational gestures baked into BlackBerry 10 were a source of frustration. If you don't start them at the very edge of the screen, the Z10 simply ignores your attempts to jump back home.

The Hub
Since the BlackBerry is known for creating email monsters ? gadgets that can handle any amount of correspondences thrown at them ? I was fairly excited about the new BlackBerry Hub. This is intended to function as a unified inbox of sorts, where all email, BlackBerry messages, SMS messages, Twitter notifications, Facebook notifications, and the like can live.

Unfortunately, as you can see in the video up top, the Hub gets overwhelming as soon as the emails and notifications start flooding in and causes more headaches than it relieves. Additionally, there's an odd quirk that sends you back to the last viewed message instead of the Hub overview whenever you toggle between other apps and the Hub. This is incredibly annoying since you then have to hit the back button to get where you want to go.

The Z10's 8-megapixel camera delivers poor image quality compared to the leading Samsung and Apple contenders, while the camera app is gimmicky at best. While some might be excited about TimeShift mode, which rapidly captures several photos and allows you to choose a subject's best face, the novelty quickly wears off and leaves one craving for the more intuitive (and higher quality) camera systems of Android and iOS. Besides, that feature is far from unique, found increasingly on other phones and cameras.

While BlackBerry devices are typically workhorses, any competitive smartphone also has to be able to serve as a primary media player. So how is the music and video playback on the Z10? Short answer: Acceptable. Long answer: You can live with it, but if you're an iPod/iPhone/iTunes addict, you'll definitely flinch at the limited content management and access of the Music Player and Video Player apps.

The rest of the BlackBerry 10 experience is fairly smooth. The device is snappy and responsive ? pesky gestures aside ? and, unlike the BlackBerry operating systems of the distant past, doesn't feel bloated.

Of course, one could write the lack of bloat off as being related to the limited app selection. BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins called attention to the fact that there are over 70,000 apps available for the operating system, and indeed we found Cut the Rope, Facebook, Twitter, and other favorites ? BlackBerry also secured Skype, Rovio, Amazon, and other popular app makers as partners ? however, we're still waiting for Netflix, Google Maps, Instagram, and Hulu, among other obvious absentees.

Overall, the BlackBerry Z10 is a solid device. If you're an existing BlackBerry user who happens to be willing to patiently adjust to an on-screen keyboard, that brand dedication may finally pay off. But if you, like me, have come to rely on iPhone or Android, chances are that you'll constantly find yourself looking for features (or apps) that are missing from BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry certainly did re-design, re-invent and re-imagine itself ? as it takes pains to tell you on its website ? but the clich? of "too little, too late" definitely rings true at this point.

Video: Inside ?The Gatekeepers?

>> be a familiar topic around here. we're back. that was a clip from the academy award -nominated "the gate keepers " which opens in select cities today. the film takes a look at intelligence agency and interviews six of its former heads. the surprise here is they sent a lot more like chuck hagel . it's led to human suffering on the part of the palestinians and has been banned for israel itself. and like president obama , they argue for the need to engage your enemies, even hamas and horan. in other words, these men wouldn't fit in very well in the republican party here in the ugs right now. they might even get badgered by lindsey gram. the film is directed by droy droy moray. thank you so much for this. i guess we always know in the state here, as you know, that military are very hesitant. they know the limitations of war in the unexpected horrors and costs of war. tell us about -- because i don't think most of us who follow israeli politics here, are fully aware of the views you got from your people in the military, the top intelligence people there about israeli security.

>> look, the basic thing is where do you want to lead this conflict. not tactically. tactically, those guys can do anything that can -- they can do. i mean, they are targeted assassinating, they are the ones dealing with interrogation, they are the ones that are issuing the curfews. but at the end of the day , where do you want this conflict to lead at the end? and these guys are coming and saying very, very strongly that israel should strive very strongly towards a two-state solution to try to reconciliate with our palestinians. so, well, basically, you are right completely. they do not understand the policy and they are more understanding with barack obama 's moll si.

>> you know, a couple weeks ago, those settlements cutting off the loop between the access bank and east jerusalem . it looked like he was shutting off the stance.

>> well, they spoke a lot about doing that. no prime minister has done that building in the e-1 territory, disconnecting, basically, the prospect of connecting to the palestinian territories . this is before the election to the extreme right wing in israel . but i think that the election has proven for i don't know how many times that the israeli public is much smarter than the politicians in there. and they say to him basically they wanted to go center and not go to the extreme right which he wanted to do.

>> what do you think? you're a pretty young guy. you look down the road for israel . you look down the road for israel . and always like to be optimistic about that country. do you see a chance for some reasonable situation, say 20, 30 years from now where there's enough of a middle class in the west bank where they have some stakes in peace. the country itself is not willing to punish terrorists. i always thaugts that was the standard. unless arabs are willing to kill arabs for jews. can you see that arriving in 20 years?

>> i think what is the gate keepers are saying to us, they are saying that this depends on two great leaders that has to be, at the same time, on both sides of the equation. and this has never happened up until now. if you asked me honestly, yok that this can happen. we don't have those leaders. and unless there will be an immense pressure, coming from the u.s. e, especially on the white house . well, i wish we could give you back them. it's up to the level of these guys.

>> i have to agree with you. those amazingly, tremendously great leaders were always assassinated by the extreme religious partners on both sides. that, as you mentioned, either the extreme right wing in israel who assassinated. this is the tragedy in the area.

>> i wishl you well of the gate keepers who's going to inform you this turbulent and devicive as ours. thank you dror moray. when we return with a dynamic massachusetts delegation to the u.s. senate . you're watching "hardball," the place

Boy held hostage in Alabama bunker for third day: officials

MIDLAND CITY, Alabama (Reuters) - A hostage-taking by a gunman accused of fatally shooting a school bus driver and then disappearing with a young boy into an underground bunker entered its third night on Thursday in a rural corner of southeast Alabama.

Law enforcement officials remained tight-lipped about the standoff near Midland City, a small town about 30 miles west of Alabama's border with Georgia, after cancelling a planned news conference.

Officials from local, state and federal agencies have been camped out by a dirt road near the bunker since Tuesday, when authorities say a gunman demanded that a student be let off a bus carrying more than 20 children home from school.

When 66-year-old driver Charles Albert Poland Jr. refused, the suspect shot him several times and fled the scene with a kindergarten student whom he appeared to have grabbed at random, officials said.

On Thursday, negotiators continued to communicate with the gunman as he remained holed up with the 5-year-old on his rural property. Area schools were closed for the remainder of the week, and residents held vigils to pray for a peaceful end to the standoff.

A scheduled evening press conference was canceled, with law enforcement officials saying they had nothing new to report.

Michael Senn, a pastor, said the suspect, identified by neighbors as 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, apparently had equipped the bunker with electricity, TV and two to three weeks' worth of supplies.

Authorities have not officially released the names of the suspected gunman or the child, who they believe is unharmed.

"We're just encouraging everybody in this country to come together and pray for the safety, protection and the quick release of this child," Senn said.

Senn, who lives near the private dirt road that runs onto Dykes' property, told the Dothan Eagle newspaper that authorities had been able to maintain contact with Dykes through some sort of pipe, possibly made of PVC, leading into the bunker.

"They've been talking to him pretty regularly," he said.

The shooting and hostage scenario happened while a national debate rages over gun violence, especially in schools, after a gunman shot dead 20 students and six staff members at a Connecticut elementary school in December.

An Alabama lawmaker who had talked with the hostage's family said on a TV interview that they were "holding on by a thread" but comforted that the boy appeared to be receiving needed medication while held captive.

The suspect and boy, who turns 6 next week, apparently did not know each other before the shooting, said state Representative Steve Clouse.

"I think it's just a random kidnapping here for this man," Clouse said.

GUNMAN MISSED TRIAL FOR MENACING CHARGE

Neighbors said they had seen Dykes digging the bunker in his yard in the past couple of years, and recalled he often carried a shotgun and acted aggressively toward people and animals.

Ronda Wilbur, who lives across the street from Dykes, referred to him as "Mean Man" and complained he had killed her family dog by beating it with a lead pipe and then bragged about it to her husband.

Dykes had been due to appear for a bench trial on Wednesday after his arrest last month on a menacing charge involving another neighbor, court records showed.

The neighbor, James Edward Davis, told CNN the arrest stemmed from an incident on December 10 when Dykes pulled a gun on him and his young daughter. Davis said Dykes was upset because he believed Davis had driven onto his property.

Dykes' decision to take a child hostage in an underground bunker made the tense situation confronting police even more complex, said Brad Garrett, a former hostage negotiator for the FBI.

"Usually they can utilize cameras to see into buildings, but with a bunker - with impenetrable walls and one way in and one way out - that's not possible," said Garrett, who now runs an investigative consulting firm based in Virginia.

"It reduces a tactical team's ability to use the element of surprise," he added.

The adult children of the slain school bus driver remembered their father, a military veteran, as a quiet man who avoided the limelight and would have shirked at being called a hero for trying to keep the students on his bus out of harm's way.

"My dad would be like, 'what's all this fuss about? I just did what I had to do,'" son Aaron Poland said on Thursday. "My dad died to protect the children."

Daniel Craig Out Of 'Dragon Tattoo' Sequel? 'No Way', Says The Girl

Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that it was Daniel Craig's salary demands that have held up production on a sequel to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Since the first film didn't fare as well as hoped, corners would have to be cut for the characters of Steig Larsson's popular novels to appear on screen [...]

(AP) ? British actor Jude Law says he'll be taking part in a time-honored American tradition this weekend: Super Bowl Sunday.

"I follow most sports, so of course I'm aware of it and I'll probably watch it, but I live in London and so I don't follow it that closely. It's more than just a game here, though, right? It's like have a party. Have a dip. Drink some beer," said Law.

When asked if he'll be participating in any tailgate parties when the Baltimore Ravens face off against the San Francisco 49ers, Law admitted he had no clue what "tailgating" meant.

"Really? OK. I believe you. I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not even gonna say," he said, laughing.

Luckily his "Side Effects" co-star, Channing Tatum, said he'd teach Law about Americans football traditions. He said he was heading to his New Orleans bar, Saints and Sinners for the weekend and was hoping for a good game.

"I really kind of want Baltimore to pull it out for Ray (Lewis) because it's a sweet story but I really like San Francisco's quarterback and whatnot so I think it's gonna be a really good game," said Tatum.

The actors joined their castmates, including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rooney Mara, at the New York premiere of their psychological thriller "Side Effects" on Thursday. The film opens in U.S. theaters next Friday.

Turns out Law and Tatum have more in common than Steven Soderbergh's latest film: They've both been named People's Sexiest Man Alive.

"Yeah, there's a complete handshake and like a password and whatnot. I can't tell you any of those. I know what your next question is. It's not gonna happen. They come and kill you ? all of them. All of them together come and actually murder you. Yeah, everybody. They come and take you in the night and you disappear if you explain any of those secrets," joked Tatum, the current title holder.

Police arrest 153 people in 'Our Peaceful Addu ... - Minivan News

Police arrest 153 people in ?Our Peaceful Addu? operation thumbnail

Police have arrested 153 people in an operation dubbed ?Our Peaceful Addu?, with the stated aim of reducing the crime rate in Addu City.

Speaking to the media yesterday at police headquarters, Head of Division Operation Command Chief Superintendent of Police Faruhaad Fikury told the media that the 153 persons were mainly arrested on alcohol and drug related charges.

Police said 120 people were released without any charges while 33 people were still in police custody, including two minors.

Faruhaad alleged police seized a large quantity of illegal drugs in Addu City during the operation, commenced on January 17.

According to Faruhaad, the cases included 71 related to alcohol, 43 traffic violations, and 39 other cases that were reported to police since the operation commenced.

Faruhaad told the press that police have so far searched 296 buildings across Addu City, and conducted 511 searches of individuals.

During the operation 702 vehicles were checked to see if they complied with traffic regulations. 14 vehicles were towed and 13 licenses were suspended, police said.

The division commander said police would conduct similar operations elsewhere in the Maldives.

In July 2010, a similar operation was conducted in Male? to reduce the crime rate in Male? City and make Male? peaceful. Police arrested 60 people, most of whom were released without charge.

On December 4, 2012,?during a press conference concerning the investigation into the murder of MP and scholar Dr Afrasheem Ali, Commissioner of Police Abdulla?Riyaz called on parliament members not to hesitate in giving more powers to police. Riyaz said at the time that such powers were required to curb growing criminal activity in Maldivian society.

?I know that members of the parliament are hesitant to grant more powers to the police because of the political views they hold. But we need stricter laws to stop such acts from happening. Hesitance to grant more powers isn?t a solution [to resolve] police discrepancies. Powers should be granted and at the same time they can establish a proper accountability mechanism,? he said at the time.

The commissioner said police would have ?zero tolerance? towards criminals and would utilise all powers and resources at hand to prevent crimes.

?That means, we will not allow a drunkard to freely wander around the street. Police officers will question suspicious people on the road and they have been given the order to stop and search anyone who they feel is suspected of?being a criminal or carrying out a crime,? he said.
