Serpentine Belt Replacement At NorthShore Automotive & RV Repair

Today?s NorthShore Automotive & RV Repair article focuses on your serpentine belt. Your serpentine belt is a long belt that?s driven by your engine. It winds around several accessories that power important automotive systems. Let?s go over them.

First, the serpentine belt drives your air conditioning system. Next, the belt powers the alternator.

The serpentine belt may also run the pumps for both the power steering and power brakes. Serpentine Belt Replacement At NorthShore Automotive & RV RepairIn some trucks, power steering may have an electric drive and power brakes can be vacuum driven.

And, on many vehicles, the serpentine belt powers the water pump (on some cars, the water pump is powered by the timing belt).

Your NorthShore Automotive & RV Repair service technician can perform a visual inspection of the belt to see if it has any cracks that signal the belt could fail soon and will measure the amount of belt material to make sure there is enough.

Federal Way drivers should be aware that there?s a special, spring loaded pulley attached to the engine called the tensioner pulley and sometimes an extra pulley call the idler pulley.?Their job is to make sure there?s a constant tension on the serpentine belt so that it doesn?t slip. The spring can become worn and no longer provide the necessary pressure to keep the belt tight. That?s why it?s often recommended that the tensioner, and the idler pulley if so equipped, be replaced at the same time as the serpentine belt.

All in all, the serpentine belt?s an important part for the function of your truck. And it?s not that expensive to replace at NorthShore Automotive & RV Repair ? so it?s good to do so before it fails.

At NorthShore Automotive & RV Repair in Federal Way WA (98023) we install quality NAPA replacement parts. Give us a call at 253.838.9142. To learn more about NAPA AutoCare, visit www.NAPAAutoCare.com.

Movie review: 'Taken 2? lacks surprise factor | UWIRE

The drama isn?t over yet for the Mills family.

In ?Taken 2,? retired CIA operative Bryan Mills is in Istanbul, Turkey, with his ex-wife and daughter, where he and his ex-wife are taken hostage. Their captor is seeking revenge for the death of his son, who Bryan killed in the original ?Taken? for kidnapping his daughter.

Bryan (Liam Neeson) is a concerned and overprotective father who also happens to be pretty adept at giving villains a beating. His daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), takes an active role in the rescue of her parents. She teams up with her father over the phone to help discover her parents? location.

The relationship between father Bryan and daughter Kim is one of the highlights of ?Taken 2.? Their bond is both believable and endearing. A few moments of tension, including an argument over Kim?s new boyfriend, makes their relationship realistic.

Kim?s role as the unlikely heroine of the movie is also refreshing. Like her father did for her in the previous movie, Kim will also go to great lengths to save her parents. However, she is not a fearless savior, as some might expect. Her fear, both for her own life and for the life of her parents, adds dimension to her character.

The plot, however, is often predictable and therefore lacks the surprise factor that is so important to the success of action films. Viewers can probably see the ending coming from a mile away. And many of the crucial plot points are mundane and expected.

With the exception of a few heartwarming father-daughter moments, the film lacks emotion. Viewers may not feel close or connected to any of the characters, as few unique qualities are given to their personalities. All members of the Mills family also remain flat and unchanging from the beginning of the film to the end.

Additionally, viewers may find it beneficial to watch the original ?Taken? prior to viewing ?Taken 2.? Some of the plot of the new film may be a little hard to follow without the back-story that the first movie provides. This is especially true of the beginning, which skips around a lot and can disorient or confuse the viewer. ?Taken? may have allowed viewers to become more connected with the characters prior to the sequel.

But, the film made tactful use of its special effects. While some action films tend to overuse explosions or car wrecks, ?Taken 2? used such effects sparingly, which was refreshing. Some viewers may see this as a negative, though, as the effects do not compensate for an insufficient plotline.

While ?Taken 2? was not a gripping thrill ride, it may make for an easy and entertaining Friday night at the movies.

Sharper, more aggressive Obama shows up to second presidential debate (+video)

In a smaller town-hall style debate at Hofstra University in New York, the presidential candidates took the stage sometimes circling each other like prize fighters.?

U.S. President Barack Obama?and Republican rival?Mitt Romney?clashed repeatedly on jobs and energy in the early stages of their second debate on Tuesday, with Obama?moving aggressively to challenge his opponent.

Obama was much sharper and more energetic than in their first encounter two weeks ago, when his listless performance was heavily criticized and gave Romney's campaign a much-needed boost.

He repeatedly accused Romney of misstating his policies as president, and resurrected his charge that the economic proposals put forward by the former private equity executive were designed to protect and bolster the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

"Governor Romney says he's got a five-point plan. Governor Romney doesn't have a five-point plan, he has a one-point plan. And that plan is to make sure that folks at the top play by a different set of rules," he said.

Romney accused his rival of overseeing a stagnant economy. "The middle class has been crushed over the last four years and jobs have been too scarce," the former?Massachusetts?governor said.

"I know what it takes to get this economy going," he said. "I know what it takes to create good jobs again."

The debate at?Hofstra University?in?Hempstead, N.Y., was in a more intimate town-hall format, in which more than 80 undecided local voters from?New York?state's?Nassau County?asked questions.

Both candidates were able to roam the stage to talk directly to the questioners, and at times they circled each other warily like prize fighters.

Romney approached?Obama at one point to ask repeatedly if licenses and permits for energy drilling on federal land had been reduced during his administration.

Romney's strong performance in the first debate helped him reverse his slide in the polls, and recent surveys have put the race for the?White House?at a virtual dead heat just three weeks ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

Obama seems to have stopped the slide in polls after the last debate. In a Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll on Tuesday, he gained a bit more ground on Romney for the third straight day and led 46 percent to 43 percent. But a Gallup/USA Today?poll showed Romney ahead by 4 percentage points in the 12 most contested states.

Obama rejected the notion that Romney was more supportive of finding more energy sources like coal and natural gas.

"When you were governor of?Massachusetts, you stood in front of a coal plant and pointed at it and said this plant kills and took great pride in shouting it down. And now suddenly, you're a big champion of coal," Obama?said.

Romney, a wealthy former private equity executive often accused of failing to connect with ordinary people, stayed on the offensive but frequently asked the moderator for more time to answer Obama.

New way to image brain-cell activity could shed light on autism and other psychiatric disorders

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- A team led by MIT neuroscientists has developed a way to monitor how brain cells coordinate with each other to control specific behaviors, such as initiating movement or detecting an odor.

The researchers' new imaging technique, based on the detection of calcium ions in neurons, could help them map the brain circuits that perform such functions. It could also provide new insights into the origins of autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other psychiatric diseases, says Guoping Feng, senior author of a paper appearing in the Oct. 18 issue of the journal Neuron.

"To understand psychiatric disorders we need to study animal models, and to find out what's happening in the brain when the animal is behaving abnormally," says Feng, the James W. and Patricia Poitras Professor of Neuroscience and a member of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. "This is a very powerful tool that will really help us understand animal models of these diseases and study how the brain functions normally and in a diseased state."

Lead author of the Neuron paper is McGovern Institute postdoc Qian Chen.

Performing any kind of brain function requires many neurons in different parts of the brain to communicate with each other. They achieve this communication by sending electrical signals, triggering an influx of calcium ions into active cells. Using dyes that bind to calcium, researchers have imaged neural activity in neurons. However, the brain contains thousands of cell types, each with distinct functions, and the dye is taken up nonselectively by all cells, making it impossible to pinpoint calcium in specific cell types with this approach.

To overcome this, the MIT-led team created a calcium-imaging system that can be targeted to specific cell types, using a type of green fluorescent protein (GFP). Junichi Nakai of Saitama University in Japan first developed a GFP that is activated when it binds to calcium, and one of the Neuron paper authors, Loren Looger of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, modified the protein so its signal is strong enough to use in living animals.

The MIT researchers then genetically engineered mice to express this protein in a type of neuron known as pyramidal cells, by pairing the gene with a regulatory DNA sequence that is only active in those cells. Using two-photon microscopy to image the cells at high speed and high resolution, the researchers can identify pyramidal cells that are active when the brain is performing a specific task or responding to a certain stimulus.

In this study, the team was able to pinpoint cells in the somatosensory cortex that are activated when a mouse's whiskers are touched, and olfactory cells that respond to certain aromas.

The researchers are now developing mice that express the calcium-sensitive proteins and also exhibit symptoms of autistic behavior and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Using these mice, the researchers plan to look for neuron firing patterns that differ from those of normal mice. This could help identify exactly what goes wrong at the cellular level, offering mechanistic insights into those diseases.

"Right now, we only know that defects in neuron-neuron communications play a key role in psychiatric disorders. We do not know the exact nature of the defects and the specific cell types involved," Feng says. "If we knew what cell types are abnormal, we could find ways to correct abnormal firing patterns."

The researchers also plan to combine their imaging technology with optogenetics, which enables them to use light to turn specific classes of neurons on or off. By activating specific cells and then observing the response in target cells, they will be able to precisely map brain circuits.

Where to Celebrate Halloween in Washington: Haunted Houses, Scavenger Hunts, and More

Where to Celebrate Halloween in Washington: Haunted Houses, Scavenger Hunts, and More

Haunted Houses and Forests

Every Washingtonian knows the can?t-miss destination of the season is Markoff?s Haunted Forest, entering its 20th season this year. Scream your lungs out on the haunted zipline or hayride, navigate the winding trails of homemade frights on the 170-acre farm, and take aim in the walking dead shooting gallery. Come in costume, as nightly prizes are awarded to the best dressed. The ghouls pop up at dusk and disappear back into the forest at midnight on October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, and 31. Attractions are priced individually, and tickets are $3, or you can buy a pack of ten for $25.

Indulge in three frights for the price of one at the Nightmare Screamplex in Boyds. Navigate the Nightmare Forest, Lost Asylum, and Field of Terror as you try to escape with your life (or at least your dignity) intact. Roast s?mores on the bonfires or have a tarot reading while you wait for the frightfests to start. For those with little ones in tow, November 2 is family night. See the full schedule online.

At Cox Farms? Fields of Fear, wander 20-plus acres of scares in the Cornightmare and take a ride on the Dark Side Hayride. For a less heart-racing experience, try the giant torchlight slide or warm up with a cup of spiced cider or hot cocoa. Avoid the frighteningly long lines and pre-purchase your tickets online.

Boogey over to the Track of Terror at Laurel Park on October 26 for an outrageous night of dancing, drinking, and scares. Sip seasonal favorite Sam Adams Octoberfest before you strut your costumed stuff on the dance floor and compete to win more than $1,000 in prizes. And don?t forget to check out the two haunted houses set up in secret hallways of the race track. Save $5 on tickets (regularly $25) if you buy them online. Check out LivingSocial Adventures? VIP package for information on an open bar and VIP parking.

Leave your fears at home as you battle attacking zombies, decaying bodies, and mad scientists at Hallow Inc.?s Warehouse Project: 4.1. The 37,000-square-foot attraction is based on a government study of radioactive fallout from the 1950s. The good news is you can give your car a night off, as this urban haunted house is accessible via White Flint Metro. Get the full backstory (and your $30 tickets) online. The Warehouse Project opens at 7 PM, and runs through November 3.

Scream for a cause at the 23rd annual Vampire Manor in Bel Alton. Admission to the fright house is $10 ($5 for kids under 12) and benefits charities including the Charles County Dive Rescue, the Bel Alton VFD, and local high school drama programs, which provide many of the actors. Get tickets online.

Tours, Exhibitions, and More

For those who prefer ghouls with a rich historical ancestry, join the six generations of dearly departed Martha Washington descendants at Tudor Place?s History Haunt. Explore five acres of ghostly gardens followed by a refreshing spirit of another kind. The haunting jaunts are offered every half hour from 6 to 8 PM on October 26, and the evening is strictly 21 and up. Tickets are $15; register online through Eventbrite.

Run for your lives, or at least for 3.2 miles, at the Blood and Guts 5K obstacle run. Try to evade the zombies, monsters, and goblins that invade the course on November 4 at Pev?s Paintball Park in Aldie all while navigating obstacles including the blood and guts pit, the tire gauntlet, and hay pits. And don?t miss the haunted theme park, Terrorville, open from 7 to 11 PM Friday and Saturday through October 28. Take your best shot in zombie paintball or laser tag and try to survive the Walk of Terror. Bonus: A portion of proceeds from both events will benefit local charities and Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax county schools. Register for the 5K online and get full details on Terrorville through the website.

Join the experts at Watson Adventures as they combine a love of sorcery and art to create three wickedly fun scavenger hunts. On October 20 from 2 to 4, engage the family in the Wizard School Scavenger Hunt at the National Gallery of Art to track down a powerful sorceress, a Snape-like potions master, flying owls, and more. Tickets are $17.50 for youth (7 to 17) and $19.50 for adults. Or ditch the kids October 26 to 28 as you embark with only a flashlight on a tour of ghost-plagued buildings near Lafayette Park. Keep your eyes peeled for the spirits of Abe Lincoln, Dolley Madison, or even the suicidal Mrs. Henry Adams. Admission is $22.50 per person. And lastly, explore the dark side of art at the National Gallery on October 27 from 2 to 4:30 as you search for skeletons, severed heads, and cold-blooded killers in the galleries. $23.50.

Everyone loves a good haunting, so explore the haunted past of the National Building Museum on lantern-lit tours, said to be led by the ghost of Mary Surratt. See if you can spot a footless figure, a limping visitor, and a grumpy horseman. Tours are given from 8 to 9 PM on select Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays through November 4. Register for tickets ($20) through the museum?s website.

Honor the dead at the Torpedo Factory Art Center?s Dia de los Muertos exhibition. The fourth annual celebration features altar installations and Day of the Dead-inspired artwork from local artists. See the art from October 29 to November 4 and celebrate the winners at the costume and dance party on November 2 from 8 to 11 PM. Enjoy live music from the Torches and learn to make your own mini altars. Tickets for the party are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, $10 for students and $35 for two.

Bring your fiercest self to DuPont Circle on October 30 for the annual Drag Queen Race. Starting at 9 PM, costumed drag queens will run from P to S streets in their most outrageous getups and heels. An informal block party typically follows.

Sharpen your carving skills and get ready to perform at Helix Lounge?s eighth annual Halloween pumpkin carving contest. Chinese kites monitor pollution in skies

An ancient Chinese kite-flying tradition has become a new citizen tool for monitoring air quality in the skies over Beijing. The project, a joint effort between a Chinese graduate student and U.S. graduate student, was first inspired by controversy regarding China's air pollution statistics.

The "Float Beijing" project's kites carry air pollution sensors as well as colorful LED lights that show the level of air quality ? green for good, yellow for moderate, red for unhealthy and pink for severely unhealthy. Since raising more than $5,000 in funding on the crowd-funding site Kickstarter, the project has held its first Beijing workshops in August and appeared at New York City's Maker Faire in September.

"The sensors were pretty easy to mount to the kites," said Deren Guler, a master's candidate in tangible interaction design at Carnegie Mellon University. "The kites' flyers helped us with that and we were able to find the best place after a few tests."

Ordinary Chinese have suffered from smog and bad air quality because of China's rapid industrialization ? a problem that the Chinese government has tried to tackle during high-profile events such as the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. But the issue turned politically hot this year when Chinese citizens noticed the big difference between the U.S. embassy's air pollution readings (publicized through Twitter) and the sunnier reports issued by the Chinese government.

Guler worked with Xiaowei Wang, a master's candidate in landscape architecture at Harvard University, to develop the kite solution in the wake of Chinese citizens demanding more detail from the official Chinese air pollution readings. Their Float Beijing project ended up marrying ancient Chinese tradition with modern technology.

Wang talked with kite flyers at a local Beijing park who recommended a master kite maker in a nearby kite market. The kite maker and his wife were "very enthusiastic" about the project, and helped the Chinese and American graduate students refine their kite design.

"They gave us some of their own kite-light decorations to help experiment with and offered to sell our modules," Guler told TechNewsDaily.

The first Beijing workshops taught Chinese citizens how to attach the air pollution sensors and lights to the kites. Such kites are able to not only detect and display general levels of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds, but also collect the data and store it for later.

Float Beijing aims to eventually create an online interactive display of the air pollution results collected by the kites, as well as a book about the project.

It's Your Business Delivers 183 Simple Tips to Grow Your Business ...

Over the last several years, I?ve heard so many of you say how busy you are and how you don?t often have time to read through a whole book to get the nuggets of how-tos or strategies that you want to put into practice inside your business.

If that sounds like you, then you?ll definitely want to read this review and possibly pick up a copy of It?s Your Business: 183 Essential Tips that Will Transform Your Small Business by JJ Ramberg (@JJRamberg) with Lisa Everson (@EversonLisa) and Frank Silverstein (@SliversteinF).

I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of It?s Your Business?the other day and I had an absolute blast reading through it this weekend.? Notice that I didn?t say that I read it back to back, I said that I was reading through it.? This is a book that you can open to any page and get your golden nugget of best small business practices for the day.

Each tip is a chapter that is titled with the tip itself such as ?decrease job related injuries.? ?Then it goes on to state the problem as it is expressed in small business:

?Job related injuries are scary and expensive, harmful to morale and can cause costly delays??

The next part of the chapter gives the solution ? reward people for staying safe. (Just that short and sweet.? No more. No less.)

This solution is followed by a real case study of a small business that has dealt with the problem and implemented the solution.? In this example, it was the owners of Amy?s Kitchen, an organic food company.

At the end of each accident free day, the company makes a contribution to a ?safety fund? and once a month they hold a contest for the best suggestion on how to improve workplace safety.? The person who comes up with the best idea gets to spin a giant wheel of fortune and win a cash prize from $100 ? $500.

There are 183 of these ?essential tips? that you can literally take on every other day in your business and will keep you busy for the year.? Here are some more examples that were featured in the book:

  • Tackle unpleasant tasks first thing in the morning ? ZipCar
  • Hire staffers who match your target demographic ? Harvard Business School
  • Be ready with a photo pitch on your phone

As you can see from these quick and dirty examples, none of these suggestions are rocket science, and yet they can be very powerful actions that will not only grow your business, but might keep you sane as well.

Main Street Lessons from MSNBC

If you watch a lot of MSNBC, you?ll recognize the author; JJ Ramberg and the stories that she tells.? JJ Ramberg is the host of MSNBC?s Your Business, the only television show dedicated to featuring small business issues and how they affect small business owners.? The program is in its sixth season and features advice from many small business experts.

What gives this book real credibility is that JJ Ramberg is an entrepreneur herself.?? She co-founded GoodSearch.com with her brother.? GoodSearch is a company that helps users transform every day actions into ways to support their favorite cause.? She?s also been a reporter for CNN and has been awarded Self Magazine?s ?Women Doing Good? award.

Ideal For Businesses of All Shapes and Sizes

There are several reasons why I enjoyed this book:

  • It is realistic and unpretentious.? The advice you?ll get here can be applied to any kind of business big or small, one thousand employees or just one.
  • The advice is more focused on actions to take, then items or products to buy.? Because so much of my business is focused on getting big results from small budgets, this really resonated with me.? These are tips more focused on quality than quantity.
  • You won?t have to read hundreds of pages to get the message.? This is a book you can have on your shelf and pull down, open, read a section and get on with your day.
  • There are lessons for everyone ? not just the owner.? While the book is written for small business owners, larger organizations can certainly take on several of the tips and apply them as a group.

See For Yourself

If anything I?ve said sparks your interest, check out the web site for It?s Your Business and download a free chapter.? You can also check out the It?s Your Business Facebook page and share your own lessons with the community or check out more current It?s Your Business tips.

One of my coaches likes to say:

?It?s simple, but it isn?t easy.?

I think that those words of wisdom apply to this book as well.? It?s Your Business takes a lot of simple tips and gives you the push you need to easily put the advice to work for your business.??

Israel says it strikes Gaza rocket cell; 1 killed

(AP) ? The Israeli military says its aircraft have struck militants planning a rocket attack in the Gaza Strip. Palestinians say one person was killed.

Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra says the identity of the person killed in the Sunday early morning strike is not yet known.

He says another Israeli airstrike on Saturday killed two people. The Israeli military says one is Hisham Saidani, a member of a faction of the ultraconservative Salafi trend believed to have ties to al-Qaida. Saidani is suspected of carrying out attacks against Israeli and Egyptian targets.

Israel says it holds Gaza's Hamas rulers responsible for violence committed by any militant faction in the territory. The two have largely maintained an unwritten truce since a brief war nearly four years ago, but flare-ups occur occasionally.

America one of the fastest growing mission fields: magazine | The ...

AMERICA is one of the fastest-growing mission fields in the world, the most recent issue of Unfinished magazine says, but if Christians are not careful they will miss opportunities to reach their ?least reached neighbors.?

The fall edition of the magazine, which is published by The Mission Society, focuses on the increasing diversity throughout the U.S. and how Christians can engage in cross-cultural ministry without leaving the city they live in. The diversity that can be found in cities and university campuses, in particular, provides both opportunities and challenges for ministries that hope to do mission work here at home.

?Acts 1:8 calls us to take the gospel to the ends of the earth while not neglecting ?Jerusalem,? our mission field at home,? Dick McClain, president and CEO of The Mission Society, said in a statement. ?Whether you live in Louisville, Kentucky, or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it is incumbent on Christian disciples to identify and then reach out to those who have had the least exposure to the gospel. The least-reached people may very well be your neighbor.?

Stan Self, senior director of church ministry for The Mission Society, told The Christian Post that one of the primary reasons the U.S. is becoming an increasingly important mission field is because of the numbers of immigrants entering the country every year. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau released earlier this year, there were nearly 40 million foreign-born people ? or 13 percent of the total population ? living in the United States as of July 2010.

These statistics suggest that understanding cross-cultural ministry is vitally important in contemporary America, but how does that affect the way churches reach out to these people?

?The first thing I think it ought to do is to just help us realize that we need to be a whole lot more observant of the people that live around us,? said Self.

Self contributed to the current issue of Unfinished magazine with an article titled ?Blind Spots,? which focused on identifying and reaching out to the people Christians often overlook in their own communities

Churches often get caught in a routine, he says, and they forget to observe their communities in search of those in need. Cross-cultural ministers should also make an effort to build relationships with others if they hope to see people from other cultures come to faith in Jesus Christ.

?The interesting thing is they?re interested in basically the same things you are,? said Self. ?They want safe neighborhoods, they want good schools for their kids to go to and they want to build friendships. And so it?s not a daunting thing to go about building relationships with people, but it?s only when you do that that you can begin to see those opportunities for bringing the Gospel into the conversation.?

He also says churches should adopt a ?go to? approach to reaching people and spend less time on a ?come to? approach. Many churches use attractional methods of drawing people to their services ? by hosting events and advertising through signs and billboards ? but churches should aspire to be more outgoing and approach the members of their community first.

It seems the release of Unfinished magazine?s fall issue couldn?t have been released at a better time. On Tuesday, The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life revealed a new study which shows that one-in-five of American adults have no religious affiliation ? the highest percentage ever recorded by polls conducted by the Pew Research Center.

Other articles found in the current issue of the magazine include advice on reaching out to international students, an interview with a youth pastor who discusses culture?s impact on teenagers today, advice on how Christians can handle economic uncertainty and an article written by McClain on the purpose of the issue.

?I?ve visited several churches that posted signs at the exits of their parking lots announcing, ?You are now entering the mission field,?? writes McClain. ?It?s true. May God help the American church to discover and embrace the least reached in our own backyard.?

Baucus, Tester urge EPA to finish Libby risk study

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? Montana lawmakers urged the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday to push forward with a proposed asbestos safety standard that will guide the cleanup of a mountain town where hundreds have died from exposure to the dangerous material.

U.S. Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester said residents of Libby have grown frustrated waiting for a pending risk study to be completed. And the two Democrats accused chemical giant W.R. Grace Inc. of trying to cloud the science on the issue.

That comes after The Associated Press reported last month that Grace pressed for the study to be delayed.

The company mined asbestos-containing vermiculite in Libby for decades. The EPA's proposed standard concludes even a tiny amount of the material can lead to lung problems. It would be 5,000 times tougher than the standard used in past cleanups addressing airborne asbestos.

Maryland-based Grace has objected to the EPA's proposal, suggesting sites across the country could be subjected to costly cleanups.

But Baucus and Tester wrote in a Thursday letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson that it was time to move forward with the risk study. They blasted Grace for weighing in against the EPA proposal and alleged company officials had "traded profits for lives" in Libby.

Health officials say hundreds of people have been killed in Libby and many more sickened by exposure to asbestos dust. The material came from the Grace mine outside town and processing plants along the Kootenai River.

"We are not surprise to find Grace trying to cloud the science or hide behind the speculative liability of other property owners," the senators wrote. "Whatever the state of cleanups at Libby and other contaminated sites around the country, We must face the reality of how toxic Libby (asbestos) really is."

The ongoing Superfund cleanup in Libby has cost at least $447 million since 1999 and is expected to last several more years. The town of about 3,000 people is about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

W.R. Grace spokesman Greg Euston said Thursday that the company would not comment on the senators' remarks.

In public testimony and filings with the EPA, Grace has argued lung problems considered a sign of asbestos disease can be confused with other health issues such as obesity. The company maintains that the science used by the EPA to craft its proposal was flawed and has urged more research.

Manufacturing and trade groups and federal agencies including the White House Office of Management and Budget also have questioned the EPA proposal. They said the low threshold falls below even background asbestos levels seen in parts of the country.

An EPA spokesman in the agency's regional office in Denver referred questions to agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., where officials did not return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The EPA is to make a final decision on the standard for Libby sometime next year.
