Fantastic Email Marketing Ideas To Let Your Business Expand

Reaching potential customers has taken on a whole new meaning since the rise of the Internet. An email marketing plan can help you build a loyal customer base and develop a rapport with your subscribers, as well. The information shared in this article can help launch your success with email marketing.

Prior to going any further, it?s essential to tell you that there are in fact many other ideas about e-mail marketing just like the courses pointed out in this online marketing reviews site: imexaminerreview.com.

Effectively marketing through email depends upon attention-grabbing messages. This might take a few tries to get it right. If something is not working for you, try a different approach. Even if you have a winning strategy, it is important to constantly see what the competition is doing.

Your subject lines should be brief and to the point. If your email subject is under 60 characters, you have a better chance of getting your customer?s attention. Long subjects can be distracting and put people off. If you can?t avoid a long subject, make sure that the most important information appears at the beginning of the subject, so it is less likely to be truncated in inboxes.

When people sign up for your newsletter, you probably want them to double-confirm their email address. Many people mistype their email, so this can ensure they input it correctly. These typos won?t happen as much if they enter it twice, which makes sure your emails get to the right spot.

Don?t waste the time of your customers. Only send out an email that has something important to show them. Don?t constantly send customers blatant sales petitions. Consider incorporating information on how to use a particular product, or troubleshoot a problem that many of your customers may have.

An email marketing campaign that offers more options to subscribers will generally be more effective. Tell the subscribers you have how many messages they?re going to get and when to expect them. Also let them know what kind of information you?re going to need from them. People will feel comfortable if they are in control.

In order to better your email marketing plan, consider joining emails with social network sites, including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Customers will then be able to share with others and put their stamp of approval on your campaign or special offers, increasing exposure and the number of people signing up with you.

Keep to a regular schedule with your emails and newsletters. Your newsletters need to be released weekly on the same day and during the same time period too. You want to provide consistency for your customers, as well as establish a periodic update from you about what?s new.

It is crucial that your email marketing campaign is relevant and interesting to your readers. If what you are sending is little more than spam, clients will flee your list. Utilize the advice you?ve read so that you can write high quality emails that your subscribers will look forward to reading.

NASA, ASU Team Finds a New Test For Osteoporosis

An anonymous reader writes "The BBC has an article about scientists at NASA who believe that they have found a new test that can detect osteoporosis earlier than existing tests. Their test involved having healthy volunteers confined to bed rest for 30 days; 'the technique was able to detect bone loss after as little as one week of bed rest.' Bone loss is an issue for astronauts as well as people affected by osteoporosis. They expect this test will help detect bone loss as a symptom of osteoporosis, but have not yet done a trial to confirm this. This is another point against anyone who claims NASA, and going to space in general, is a complete waste of money."

3 Home Improvement Projects You Can Do With Your Kids

Following are a few home improvement projects that are perfect to do with your kids.

1. Clean out the Gutters Don't get us wrong--we're not suggesting that you put your child up on the roof. But there are plenty of ways that your kids can help you with the monotonous chore of cleaning out the gutters. First, have your child help you walk around the house and check the gutters for spots that are rusty, loose, or look as though they're crooked. These are the areas of your gutters that you'll most likely want to repair at a later date.

When it's time for you to climb up on the ladder and get to work scooping out that gutter muck, ask your child to stay on the ground and put the debris that you scoop out of the gutters into a garbage bag.

2. Work on some gardening Gardening is a great way to include your kids in a home improvement project. Go the extra step and have your kids help you create a garden just for them. First, sit down and talk to your kids about what types of things they'd like to plant. Do they want to stick to flowers and vegetation, or would they like to plant some vegetables? Have the kids help you sketch out a plan for what the garden will include.

Once the plans are made, it's time to begin clearing some space outside for the garden. With your children's help, till the soil in your chosen spot and then get going planting the seeds. Explain to your kids the importance of watering the plants regularly and of weeding the garden. They're sure to be proud of themselves and of their garden when it's time to pick the veggies or when the flowers bloom.

3. Paint a room Painting is one of the best home improvement projects for kids to help out with. You can begin getting your children involved from the start by having them help you pick out the ideal paint color for whatever room you plan on painting. Once it's time to begin the actual painting process, dress your child in some old clothes and set him or her up with a roller. They're sure to have a blast helping you paint! This is particularly fun for kids if you're painting their room. They'll have a feeling of pride in their work once the job is completed.

These are just three home improvement projects that you can easily do with the help of your little ones. What other projects can you think of that kids can help out with?

The Significance Of Connecting With Your Online Customers Through

New Era Fitted Caps During the early years of online marketing, just the fact that you had more practical knowledge than anyone else allowed you to generate money on the web. The marketers that were the first to employ autoresponders and leverage Google Adwords put themselves in a position to profit since there was almost no competition back then. Eventually, web marketing has developed and changed; these days it is important to create good relationships with customers. This post will talk about various aspects of relationship marketing and the methods you can use to develop your business.

Marketing via email is not the top method of connecting with potential customers anymore; still you should take it into consideration when growing a business on the Internet. Building a list is different since the primary focus is not on increasing your number of subscribers. In reality, your list members will be on more lists than just yours, and so your goal is to get them to keenly open and read your emails. There is no doubt that email open rates have dropped in recent years, so you should position yourself in such a way that your messages are seen as a priority to individuals on your list. It is actually a fact in life that the more you give, the more you could expect to receive. You will find that your customers are more willing to buy things that you suggest if you have previously provided them helpful information at no cost.

Cheap Hats So if we believe the continued importance of email marketing, we need to also acknowledge that social media is transforming the face of relationship marketing. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are today integral parts of the lives of large numbers of folks and the communications that they have with each other can help or hurt a business online. As online marketers it can be really beneficial to have a presence on these sites so long as you have the intention to provide a positive experience for folks you interact with. If you engage with people in a manner that they like you and trust you, they may be ready to visit your website or be a part of your email list. This is the objective because then you can convert visitors into buyers through your email correspondence or onsite marketing.

Should you choose to study these social sites, you can expect to quickly find a dedicated group of people who will follow you because of how you develop a relationship with them. There are numerous internet marketers who have experienced good results with these sites and you can emulate them in your own business. Typical of any type of online marketing, should you opt to study the efforts of those who have experienced good results with a specific method, there?s no need to make mistakes that can hurt your business long term.

New Era Hats These days relationship marketing is a priority on the Internet, and if you can offer value while being a person of ethics and someone folks can trust, you can expect to succeed.

Wine hoax fools industry elite

Rare-wine collectors are savvy, competitive guys with a taste for impossible finds. The biggest hoax in history took place right under their noses.
Even at Rudy Kurniawan?s coming-out party in September 2003, there were questionable bottles of wine.
A score of Southern California?s biggest grape nuts had gathered at the restaurant Melisse in Santa Monica that Friday for a $4,800-a-head vertical tasting of irresistible rarities provided by Kurniawan: P?trus in a dozen vintages, reaching as far back as 1921, in magnums.
Paul Wasserman, the son of prominent Burgundy importer Becky Wasserman, is something like wine royalty, but before this event, the oldest P?trus he had tasted was from 1975.
Nonetheless, two bottles left him scratching his head. The 1947 lacked the unctuousness of right-bank Bordeaux from that legendary vintage, and the 1961 struck him as ?very young.? He briefly entertained the idea of ?possible fakes???61 P?trus in magnum has fetched up to $28,440 at auction?and jotted, in his notes on the ?47, ?If there?s one bottle I have serious doubts about tonight, this is it.?
But in the rare-wine world, doubts are endemic; murkiness is built into a product that is concealed by tinted glass and banded wooden cases and opaque provenance and the fog of history.
Guests at tastings don?t want to bite the hand that quenches them. Auctioneers may not want to risk losing consignments by nitpicking ambiguous bottles. Winemakers don?t like to talk about counterfeiting, for fear of the taint. Also, one thing not high on the FBI?s list of investigative priorities: billionaires getting snowed by wine forgers.

Wind farms considering detection systems to prevent bird deaths

MOJAVE ? Just before daybreak, a group of naturalists don parkas to blunt the frosty wind blowing down a narrow canyon in the Tehachapi Mountains north of Los Angeles. They mount spotting scopes and cameras on tripods, and wait.

"Showtime," one of them whispers at the first rays of light. The silence is broken by thousands of brightly colored birds the size of Christmas ornaments pouring north through the canyon on whooshing wings, just a few yards above ground.

Kern County bird expert Bob Barnes stands spellbound. Peering through binoculars, he says, "They're following the contours of the canyon like a living river of birds."

PHOTOS: Bird radar

This is Butterbredt Spring, arguably the best place in California to witness the spring migration of birds. Why it attracts so many ? tanagers, warblers, orioles, grosbeaks, vireos and flycatchers ? is not entirely understood. But something about the topography and its fierce winds has a funneling effect on birds moving over the mountains along the Pacific flyway.

Throughout the Tehachapis, wild and windy places like this have become crucial refuges for songbirds, as well as for critically endangered California condors and federally protected golden eagles. They are also a magnet for wind farms spreading across the region's cliffs, canyons and ridgelines.

Now, in what has become one of the most critical conservation issues in the state, wind farms are considering using radar units and experimental telemetry systems that they hope will avoid harming birds by identifying incoming species early enough to switch off the massive turbines and then ? to minimize costs and maximize profits ? turn them back on again as quickly as possible.

"The greatest threat to migrating birds in my lifetime is unfolding in those mountains," said Jesse Grantham, former California condor coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "As for condors, strikes are inevitable. They travel together when a food source appears, so a single turbine blade could take out a lot of them in one swing."

If that happens, a wind farm could face lawsuits, criminal charges and ample bad publicity.

"Renewable energy operators are coming around to the view that they have to do something," said Gary Andrews, general manager and chief executive of De Tect Inc., a leading manufacturer of avian radar systems. If a protected species is killed at a wind farm that has a bird tracking system, prosecutors and others could conclude that the operator had done everything it could to prevent harm to wildlife, Andrews said.

Radar systems are expensive, with no guarantee they will perform. One problem is differentiating among avian species. Condors, for example, soar thousands of feet high while hunting for carrion. Golden eagles swoop fast and close to the ground. Migrating songbirds fly low in strong headwinds.

A standard De Tect avian radar unit sells for about $500,000 and works best in flat, uncluttered expanses devoid of trees and bushes that could overwhelm the telltale blip of, say, a condor. In mountainous terrain such as the Tehachapis, multiple radar units are recommended ? some to look into valleys, others to look out of them. Additional "bells and whistles" include telescopic video attachments capable of discerning an eagle from a turkey vulture, Andrews said.

Avian radar systems are in operation at wind farms in Texas and in European nations including Spain. A radar unit was installed at Pattern Energy's controversial Ocotillo Express Wind Project site in Imperial County. Pattern Energy declined to comment about its effectiveness.

Separately, the San Diego Zoo is developing a telemetry system to provide real-time data on the altitude and speed of every California condor outfitted with a transmitter. The system would automatically shut down turbines if a condor ventured within striking range.

Prospective customers for detection systems include the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Pine Tree wind farm, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, which is under federal investigation in connection with eight golden eagle carcasses found at the site over the last two years.

The DWP is developing an avian and bat protection plan to include measures for mitigating risks. Later this year, the agency plans to test a $3-million radar system designed to sweep the horizon, vertically and horizontally, for large birds, said Mark Sedlacek, director of environmental affairs for the DWP.

The DWP awaits necropsy reports that could determine whether Pine Tree will earn the dubious distinction of becoming the first wind farm in the United States to face criminal charges for killing eagles.

The agency initially reported that it believed turbines were responsible. However, it now says it should not have presumed a cause of death, raising the possibility that the eagles died in any number of ways, including at the hands of someone trying to discredit the facility.

Shawn Smallwood, an expert on raptor ecology at wind farms, said, "We know that birds die of all kinds of natural causes ? but for eagles to die in those numbers is beyond the pale. I've been working with raptors since 1989 and I have never found a dead eagle outside of a wind farm."

Pine Tree is adjacent to NextEra Energy's North Sky River Project, which calls for 100 turbines across 12,781 acres of private lands.

A risk assessment of that project, which is within a mile of Butterbredt Spring, warned that condors spend considerable time soaring within the potential rotor-swept heights of the mega-turbines, which are more than 200 feet tall. A year ago, Fish and Wildlife detected two condors within three miles of the project and determined that it was likely that one of the birds flew directly over it. North Sky River is considering avian radar systems.

Environmental organizations led by the Sierra Club have sued the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for approving the right-of-way for the project. Of particular concern is the threat to condors, eagles and migrating birds that will pass through to and from Butterbredt Spring.

NextEra declined to comment.

Bird expert Barnes summed up the issues this way: "When there is no wind, turbines are switched off and birds fly high overhead. When the wind blows hard, birds flying into or out of Butterbredt Spring fly low. Connect the dots."

Chely Wright's country life is peaceful, not easy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two years after becoming the first country star to come out as gay, Chely Wright is now at peace, living honestly and married to another woman, but she feels somewhat cut off by the country music world to which she has devoted her life.

Gay artists have long struggled with the impact that coming out might have on their careers, but Wright thinks the time has never been better to be open despite her struggles depicted in a new film documentary, "Wish Me Away," in U.S. theaters June 1.

Still, since she announced she was a lesbian in 2010, the invitations for charity events, award presentations and radio appearances have all but disappeared, said Wright, who is as famous for her hard-working nature as she is for her good looks.

"When people say, 'it's not that hard. Who cares anymore? Coming out is no big deal.' Oh, it really is, and I think 'Wish Me Away' really displays that narrative of any person coming out. Not just for a singer, for anybody it is hard," she told Reuters.

The movie is a follow-up of sorts to her coming out memoir "Like Me: Confessions Of a Heartland Country Singer" and her last album, "Lifted Off The Ground" with the single "Broken" that chronicled her true romantic heartbreak. It also completes a two-year period in which Wright, 41, has spoken openly of hiding herself for fear of losing her hard-won success.

But with the aid of tear-filled video diaries, the film goes beyond the book in offering a behind-the-scenes look at prepping a public figure for the pressure and anguish of coming out.

As with the book and album, Wright said she allowed the filmmakers to document her life because she wanted to give young gay people strength and show others what it is really like to face oneself truthfully.

"It's important for those who don't understand the journey, the real fear," she said. "And those very deep profound moments of feeling isolated and afraid to take a step that might get you kicked out of your church, might get you kicked out of your social situation or might cause you to lose your job."

The film documents Wright's rise through country music to her first top 40 hit in 1997, "Shut Up and Drive," and her first country No. 1 single two years later, "Single White Female," in a career spanning seven albums and over a dozen hit singles.

She was named one of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people and briefly dated country singer Brad Paisley.

"SKILLED LIAR"

"Wish Me Away" also delves into her parallel secret life, living for years with another closeted woman in a 12-year on-and-off relationship. Of her double life, Wright now says: "I put myself through a military-like discipline to pull this off ... I became a very skilled liar."

Her lowest point came at age 35 when a male country singer confronted her about gay rumors and said fans wouldn't accept it, leading her to deny being lesbian, break off her relationship and eventually put a gun in her mouth.

"I reached my breaking point, but thank God I didn't pull the trigger," she said.

The film recounts a sometimes troubled childhood growing up in Kansas and a strained relationship with her mother, as well as a continuing strong commitment to her religious faith.

"I felt like a sinful person when I dated men and allowed them to feel for me in a way I knew I could never naturally feel for them. That felt wrong and a lie," she said.

After coming out, she added, "I felt honest ... I have peace inside of me now."

But being honest in public has had its drawbacks. She has lost some fans. Her last album - less country than previous efforts - sold only a third of what she usually would have.

Since coming out, she said she hasn't been invited to return to old venues where she once performed or asked to become involved in charity events that typically would lure celebrities of her former, straight stature.

"I was one of those people the community engaged, and they don't engage me anymore," she said. "I don't want to make it seem like it doesn't hurt my feelings. It does hurt my feelings to be excommunicated from one's passion in an industry that I worked very hard in. It's unfair, but it's not ruining my day."

Wright is quick to add that she "knew this was coming."

Tony Brown, a top Nashville music executive and producer on some of Wright's albums, said he thought her absence from award shows and social functions was mostly to do with a fixation on today's new crop of stars.

"Chely's just carving out a new place in her celebrity. She's always been so driven that she easily gets impatient," he said. "I am proud of Chely and her status as a person, and her celebrity has been elevated in my eyes."

Wright said she is hopeful of attracting new fans and regaining old ones for an album she will start recording this year. And she isn't about to give up her beloved country music.

"If I wanted to be a pop singer, I would have done that 20 years ago," she said. "I love country music."

Santa Visits Lancaster Tornado Victims

Justin Hinton, NBC 5 News

Brothers, Anthony Colunga (left) and Joseph Cabello (right), play with their new toys after the tornado destroyed many of the toys they already owned.

Santa Claus treated?children in Lancaster to an early Christmas by bringing a Convoy of Toys to those who lost stuffed animals, race cars, and other significant objects during the tornado on April 3.

Doug Portwood, and other members of Lone Star Santa, met at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church to hand out the gifts.

?We felt that this mission, this Convoy of Toys, was something that Santa Claus could do year round, whenever people might need some help or support,? he said.

Portwood started Lone Star Santa after last year?s tornado wiped out much of Joplin, Missouri.

?They lost some of their very special toys and possessions so Lone Star Santa thought we could come in and fill that void in those children's lives after a natural disaster,? he said.

After that experience, he brought the Convoy of Toys to Texas, southern Oklahoma, and western Louisiana. He says he?s happy to give toys to kids who are often forgotten when disaster strikes.

Debbie Cabello, a tornado victim, brought her three sons to collect a few new items. The tornado?s strong winds carried many of their toys over the fence as it swept across their neighborhood.

Once they returned home, they immediately opened them and began playing with them.

?It just shows a lot of love, for people coming out here to do that,? Cabello said.

You have to consider the attention span that people have on Internet. When there are off business hours, this is when this can be very problematic. If you want to, you can use a VA to take care of situations like this. Your initial efforts with making positive changes with customer service in your business have to start with you. Forecasters: 9 to 15 storms this hurricane season

MIAMI (AP) ? U.S. forecasters predicted Thursday that this year's Atlantic hurricane season would produce a normal number of about nine to 15 tropical storms.

As many as four to eight of those storms could strengthen into hurricanes, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's initial outlook for the six-month storm season that officially begins June 1. One to three of those could become major hurricanes with top winds of 111 mph or higher.

The weather phenomenon known as El Nino, which warms Pacific waters near the equator and increases wind shear over the Atlantic, may develop by the late summer or early fall and help suppress storm development, forecasters said.

This season got an early start when Tropical Storm Alberto formed Saturday off the coast of South Carolina. Alberto dissipated Tuesday over the Atlantic.

Forecasters name tropical storms when their top winds reach 39 mph; hurricanes have maximum winds of at least 74 mph. The next named storm will be named Beryl.

No major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall in the last six years, since Hurricane Wilma cut across South Florida in 2005. Federal officials used Thursday's prediction to remind coastal areas about the importance of emergency preparedness.

August will mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew's catastrophic landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 storm. The season that spawned Andrew started late and produced a total of just six named storms.

"Although this outlook suggests a less active season compared to recent years, the bottom line here is to prepare," said Robert Detrick, NOAA assistant administrator in the agency's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. "It takes just one major landfalling hurricane to make for a bad season."

The seasonal average is 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

The 2011 hurricane season, one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, produced Irene, one of the costliest storms in U.S. history.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30, and the peak period for hurricane activity runs from August through October.

LONDON (AP) ? Skepticism that European Union leaders will be able to cobble together a plan to kick-start the region's faltering economy and deal with its crippling debt crisis hit stock markets hard Wednesday.

Leaders of the 27 EU countries are to meet in Brussels later in the day for a summit that will focus on Europe's economic woes and Greece's political crisis. An election on June 17 is widely considered to be a referendum on the country's membership of the euro and that's caused big jitters in the markets over the past couple of weeks.

There had nevertheless been some hope in recent days that the summit might make progress towards shoring up Europe's defenses against financial turmoil. Any enthusiasm appears to have vanished with Germany's continued refusal to back the idea of jointly-issued eurobonds. Proponents of eurobonds say they could help mitigate the crisis by spreading debt risk across the single currency zone.

"Hopes for today's EU summit have been well and truly chucked out of the window, as the Germans once again state their firm opposition to eurozone bonds as a means of solving the crisis," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was 1.8 percent lower at 5,305, while Germany's DAX lost 1.7 percent to 6,328. The CAC-40 in France was 1.9 percent lower at 3,025.

The euro was also under pressure, trading 0.1 percent lower at $1.2650, near four-month lows.

Wall Street was headed for a retreat, too, with both Dow futures and the S&P 500 futures down 0.7 percent.

Europe's battle to contain its debt crisis, now well into its third year, is likely to remain the focus of attention all the way up to and beyond the Greek election.

The main concern is that political parties that are against the terms of the country's bailout package winning will win the election. If Europe then cuts off its funding to Greece, the country may face a messy exit from the euro, raising concerns among investors that other countries might follow. Some analysts say a Greek exit would herald the beginning of the end of the euro and could slam the global economy.

Another big worry for investors is a slowdown in Chinese growth, compounded by a reluctance of Chinese companies to borrow because of uncertainty about the economy.

Those concerns dented sentiment earlier in Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 index tumbled 2 percent to close at 8,556.60, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.3 percent to 18,786.19 and South Korea's Kospi lost 1.1 percent at 1,808.62.

Oil prices tracked equities lower, with benchmark oil for July delivery down 88 cents at $90.97 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Tuberculosis increases the risk of lung cancer mortality in the elderly

ATS 2012, SAN FRANCISCO Tuberculosis independently predicts death from lung cancer in the elderly, according to a new study from researchers in Hong Kong.

"There is a high incidence of both tuberculosis and lung cancer among the elderly in Hong Kong," said lead author Chi Chiu Leung, MBBS, consultant chest physician in the Tuberculosis and Chest Service of the Department of Health of Hong Kong. "In our prospective follow-up study of a cohort of 61,239 subjects aged 65 years or older, we found that active tuberculosis was an independent predictor of lung cancer death after adjustment for a number of demographic and health-related factors."

The results will be presented at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.

Study subjects were enrolled from 18 Elderly Health Centers of the Department of Health in Hong Kong between 2000 and 2003 and retrospectively cross-matched with 1993-2003 data from the tuberculosis notification registry. The cohort was followed prospectively through 2011 with causes of death ascertained through the territory-wide death registry.

Of 61,239 study subjects, 516 had active tuberculosis prior to study enrollment. During follow-up, there were 1,344 deaths from lung cancer, 910 deaths from other tobacco-related malignancies, and 2,003 deaths from non-tobacco-related malignancies.

After adjustment for gender, age, language spoken, education level, marital status, housing situation, public means-tested financial assistance status, ever-smoking status, passive smoking, alcohol use, body mass index, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or asthma and family history of malignancy, having active tuberculosis before study enrollment was significantly associated with death from lung cancer but not with death form the other two categories of malignancies.

"The association between tuberculosis and lung cancer death in elderly patients in our study likely reflects the effect of tuberculosis on the occurrence of this cancer," said Dr. Leung. "Lung cancer mortality is increasing rapidly with the aging population in China and other Asian Countries. Our results call for greater attention to the possibility of lung cancer in patients with a history of tuberculosis and increased public health initiatives aimed at tobacco and tuberculosis control."

"With accumulating knowledge on risk factors other than cigarette smoking, attempts should be made to build a more comprehensive predictive model for lung cancer to target future screening activities," Dr. Leung concluded. "Further delineation of the underlying mechanisms may also help to identify potential drug targets for prevention and/or treatment of this important deadly disease."

Abstract 34214
Tuberculosis Increases The Risk Of Lung Cancer Death In The Elderly
Type: Late Breaking Abstract
Category: 09.22 - Lung Cancer: Epidemiology (CP)
Authors: C.C. Leung1, L. Hui2, T.H. Lam3, W.W. Yew4, W.S. Law2, C.M. Tam2; 1Department of Health - Hong Kong/HK, 2Department of Health - Hong Kong/CN, 3The University of Hong Kong - Hong Kong/CN, 4Grantham Hospital - Hong Kong/CN

Abstract Body

Rationale: In Hong Kong, the annual tuberculosis notification rate exceeded 150/100,000 person-years among persons aged 65 or above. Lung cancer tops the list of all cancer deaths. With the high incidence of both conditions, a prospective follow-up study was therefore conducted to explore their relationship.

Methods: A cohort of clients aged 65 years or above, enrolled at 18 Elderly Health Centers of the Department of Health in Hong Kong from 2000 to 2003 was assembled and retrospectively cross-matched with the territory-wide tuberculosis notification registry from 1993 to 2003 for active tuberculosis notified before the enrollment, using the identity card number as unique identifier. The cohort was then followed up prospectively through linkage with the territory-wide death registry for causes of death till December 31, 2011. Lung cancer was defined as primary carcinoma of the lung with the corresponding International Classification of Disease (ICD) 9 codes of 162, or ICD 10 codes of C33-C34. Other tobacco-related malignancies included carcinoma of nasopharynx, larynx, lip, oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, bladder, prostate, cervix, renal cell carcinoma and acute myeloid leukemia. All subjects with suspected or confirmed malignancy at enrollment and those who died within two years of follow-up were excluded.

Results: Out of 61239 included subjects, 516 had been notified for active tuberculosis before enrolment. After a total of 612,736 person-years of follow-up, 1344, 910 and 2003 deaths occurred from lung cancer, other tobacco-related malignancies and non-tobacco-related malignancies respectively. Active tuberculosis before enrollment was associated with lung cancer death (odds ratio: 2.38, 95% confidence level: 1.64?.45, pConclusion: Tuberculosis independently predicted death from lung cancer in the elderly, likely reflecting its effect on the occurrence of this high-mortality condition. With the rapidly aging population in China, heightened clinical alertness for the possibility of lung cancer in patients with history of tuberculosis is called for, alongside public health measures for tobacco and tuberculosis control.

Can I Offer To Rent A House That Is For Sale? | REALTOR.com ...

questions

Q: Do people who are selling their house ever entertain an unsolicited offer to rent their home? We are not in a position to buy quite yet, and would consider doing a lease with option to buy after 1 year or something like that. If the homeowner doesn?t have their home up for rent, would they consider something like this?
?Nikola, Atlanta, GA

A: Yes, people who are selling homes sometimes consider leasing the home for 1 year or more. It?s worth a shot.

I recommend hiring a Realtor to help you approach the seller. It costs you nothing to hire your own Realtor as a buyer/renter.

Explain that you are not ready to buy, but love their home and would like to rent it for at least 1 year with the intent of preparing to buy it from them at a later date. It could be win-win!

A: You won?t know unless you ask. Many times, if a seller does a lease with option to buy ? they will want a large amount up front so that if you do walk away without buying ? they have something for the time it was tied up. Don?t get me wrong though ? not only do they get an amount upfront ? normally an amount of rent is paid per month along with additional funds that will be added to it to make up your total down payment when it comes time to buy. This can be confusing ? so make sure if you do it ? you have someone explain it all very well!
Lana Lavenbarg is a Realtor? with RE/MAX Ideal Brokers, Inc.in Grants Pass, OR.

A: You can ask, the worst they can do say is no. Ask your agent to help you find a property suitable for a lease option and explain the pros and cons to you.
